Writing Music: Berlin

Writers seem to be divided into two groups. There are those who love to write with music, and those who can’t stand to have any sort of music playing while they write. I am one of those who love to have music playing all the time, and, like many other writers, I have a long list of pieces that I like to listen to while writing. Sometimes I feel like listening to songs with words and some days I prefer instrumental music. Some days I’m quite happy to write to the soundtrack of a movie, and sometimes I need something completely different. But, whatever the occasion, I do love to have a tune playing through my headphones while my fingers fly.

As well as listening to the music, I like to share my music with other writers, and I always love to hear what they listen to as well. Because I like to share my music so much, I decided to start a blog series where I will share a piece of my writing music in every post. There’s so much good, inspirational music out there, perfect for inspiring words, scenes and even whole novels. Music is also very motivational. Sometimes, all I need to make me feel like writing is the right song.

This week, I wanted to share a piece of instrumental music from one of my favourite groups, the Piano Guys. This piece is called Berlin. What I love most about this piece is the plucked sound of the cello and the subtle drum beat underneath. I find it’s especially good for listening to when writing an emotional scene or one with a bit more action in it. When you’re not writing, I definitely recommend you watch the video to go with it too. Few people look happier when making music than this man.

What do you think of this piece? Do you like to write with music or do you prefer to write in silence? What is your favourite piece to write to?

  1. I love this song! It's fantastic aaaand so is most of the songs by the Piano Guys. They're ridiculously talented, right?! I love their Frozen medley. I almost always have music playing while I write. I used to listen to music 24/7 but now...not so much. *shrugs* I still have it on, but it has to be super low in the background. And it's always stuff like movie soundtracks. I usually have a soundtrack per book and then when I finish writing a book, I never listen to the soundtrack again! :P *headdesk*

    1. Oh they are amazingly talented. Their Frozen medley is probably one of the best I've heard so far. I like to listen to all their music while I'm writing. They have so many good pieces. I always listen to music while I write too. And if I don't, I always have headphones in so people will think I'm listening to music and leave me alone. You have book soundtracks? That's really cool. I've never found a playlist for a book yet. Do you ever listen to the soundtrack while editing, or do you only listen to it while writing?

  2. I'm definitely a music person. I always have it playing when I'm writing or blogging or doing just about anything on the computer.
However, on occasion, I want absolute quiet. It's not very often, but when I have a big idea to think through or I want to focus on something 110%, I have earplugs stashed in my desk drawer.

    1. I know what you mean about needing silence sometimes. Most of time I have music playing whatever I'm doing. But, like you, sometimes I need silence too. The ear plugs are a clever. At the moment when I need silence, I just leave my headphones in without any music going to keep me focused and fool everyone into thinking I'm listening to music so they won't disturb me.
