Writing Music: Counting Stars

It may have become fairly evident by now that I love to listen to instrumental string music. A new group I discovered recently is Simply Three, which is a trio of instrumentalists playing modern songs on the cello, violin and bass. I’m always interested in music that involves the bass, which is an instrument I’ve not seen used for modern music before. Their cover of Counting Stars is my favourite of all their current covers, and it makes for amazing writing music too.

This piece has a constant, driving beat in the background, which to me feels like constant, inevitable motion. It feels like the perfect piece for a scene where everything is changing around the characters, or for a slightly more active scene. I could also see this scene being very suitable for a transition where the main character is learning some important skill, or finally mastering something.

Have you heard Simply Three before? What are you listening to at the moment? Link me to your current favourite song!

  2. I'm so glad you shared this! I'd about given up looking for instrumental music like that (versus just soundtracks). I love this group so much now! They've even got a playlist with a bunch of instrumental covers. Awesomeness.
