Writing Music: Binks' Sake

I often feature a lot of moody music in my Writing Music posts. I’ve spotlighted everything from sad pieces to war tunes, and tension filled songs. Today however, I’ve chosen a piece from violinist Taylor Davis that is none of these things. While they’re all very beautiful and emotional pieces, sometimes you just need a plain happy piece to make you and your characters feel good, and that’s what I’d like to share with you this week.

Binks’ Sake is a very cheery, light-hearted song. To me, it feels like a calm, happy time before the adventure starts, or an idyllic lifestyle out in the countryside. (Part of it also sounds like the dwarves’ song from Snow White, but that could just be me.) It makes me think of a musician performing in a rustic inn somewhere on the road with a whole bunch of cheery country men drinking beer.

Also, after realising that I have absolutely no information about me on this blog, I have finally made an ‘About Me’ page. Hopefully you’ll know a little more about me after reading it. I’m thinking about making other pages too, but I’m not quite sure which ones to add. So I’m asking you, what pages would you like to see on this blog?

What are you listening to this week? Anyone else here the dwarves’ song in this piece? Have you checked out my new ‘About Me’ yet? What other pages would you like to see on this blog?

  1. You're right, this is a darn happy piece. XD It reminds me of the Irish music I sometimes listen to!

(And I can't seem to find your About Me page... Might you direct me to the correct place?)

    1. Irish music is so cool to listen to. When I was much smaller, I used to learn Irish dancing for a little while, and I always loved how lively and cheery the music was.

I went to find out why you couldn't see the page and realised that my pages gadget in the sidebar hadn't updated. Silly technology. All fixed now so hopefully you'll be able to find it now!

    2. We have an old Riverdance VHS and sometimes I pull it out and watch them dance. And one time I made my friend watch the entire thing even though secretly I only watched it for the Les Mis 10th Anniversary Concert Edition preview at the beginning but that's another story entirely.

      Found it!

    3. Haha! That's a great reason for watching it. And very sneaky.
      Glad you found it ok.

  2. I LOVE that piece. It's my go to piece for ending scenes or ones where characters are just chillin' out:)

    1. It would be an excellent piece for ending scenes. Actually, now that I think about it, it suits a festival scene from my fantasy book perfectly too!

  3. It's just not the same without Brook's quiet sadness, or Luffy's madness for that matter :p

    1. I actually went and looked up this piece after you commented to see where it came from. I didn't realised that it was actually written for both a major and minor key so it could feel happy or sad. I'd love to hear the sad version now. The happy version is really cool, so the sad version would be an interesting contrast.

    2. Not exactly the sad version, but more the calm version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQjZ_-u7yAk

The sad version is a little more difficult to find, because they blend both the happy/silly version with it, and the memories of the character playing it with his companions as they fall one by one until he's the only one remaining.

    3. The song has such a mournful sound when it's played like that. The beginning certainly sounds sad. That's a really clever progression of music actually. I'm impressed at the creativity. The story arc certainly sounds like it suits a piece that gets sadder and sadder. Ugh, I'm getting plot bunnies now!

    1. I was surprised at just how cheerful it was. It makes a nice change from all the moody music I listen to normally. I'm really glad you enjoyed listening to it.
