Writing Music: Stairwells

Some songs create pictures of scenes and express very distinct moods, making them the perfect background music for writing sessions. Others seem like they were made for character inspiration and make the best character theme tunes, either because of the emotion expressed, or the story told by the lyrics. Today’s writing music, Stairwells, an original song by the amazingly talented Nick Pitera, is just such a character song.

Stairwells would suit a character interested in the performing arts, maybe someone who dreams of making it big on stage, but who just can’t get their lucky break. Or it could be someone who loves something, like music, but doesn’t dare share their dreams with other people. It could also suit a character who’s not where they want to be in life and who can’t seem to reach their dreams. It’s a beautiful piece of reflection and acceptance.

What are you listening to this week? Have you heard Nick Pitera’s music before? What is your favourite piece of his?

  1. I normally listen to the Dallas String Quartet if I'm doing something that requires focus.

  2. I haven't hear of Nick Pitera before, but now I'll be sure to check out his music :)
I'm listening to my old mp3-player. I lost it in 2011 and found it last week. It's so much fun to listen to the music I loved to bits when I was in high school :)

    1. That must have been some find. Have your music tastes changed much since you were in high school? My tastes got more modern as I got older. I used to listen to nothing but classical music and movie soundtracks when I was younger. Ok, so I still listen to those a lot, but I like modern music too now. It's interesting looking back at old favourite songs, isn't it? There's something about a favourite song from the past that brings back all sorts of memories.

  3. Nick Pitera's so great. :) The song is definitely perfect for that person who's still waiting to make it big—a lovely, melancholy reflection. :)

    1. It's got such a lovely atmosphere to it, hasn't it? Somber, but not without a little hope and ambition to it. Nick Pitera is such a talented musician, isn't he? I would love to have the skills he does. Thanks for stopping to listen.

  4. This is a great song!

Currently, I'm listening to whatever free music I can get off Amazon Music. That being Kansas, Sara Bareilles, Pentatonix, Journey....and Elvis. :)

    1. Pentatonix music is awesome. I have three of their albums on my iPod. It's almost embarrassing to say, but though I share a name with Elvis, I know almost none of his music. Maybe it's time I changed that?

  5. WOW! I love Nick Pitera, but I totally missed this piece. How beautiful it is.
I was just thinking about recommending Louisa Wendorff to you. She does the most beautiful mashup pieces. I really love her Pretty Hurts/Try/Who You Are mashup. I can't believe it! She's got the prettiest voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTPlclw95Jk

  6. I've not heard of Nick Pitera before. This is song has well-written lyrics. I'm not a fan of the tune, though, perhaps it isn't too easy to catch on for myself, haha. However, Pitera does have a soothing voice, and sings well. :) "I’ve come to terms that I may never see my name, Up there, In shining lights, But that don’t mean that here and now can’t be enough for me, To be alright." I suppose those would be the best lines in the song. It clearly depicts how someone has tried his or her best, and as you mentioned, finally realises and accepts their fate but continues to strive on. I'm listening to U2 songs this week, and a couple of other hearty songs. Not sure if you've heard of this song by U2, it's called Every Breaking Wave, you may take a listen of the acoustic version here. I suppose it's quite soothing like Stairwells too, but I'm not sure if you'll enjoy it. Happy listening. :)

    1. Apologies for the typo error, I meant to write 'This song' instead of 'This is song' in the second sentence. Sorry! :)

    2. That's very true. I hadn't really thought about it before, but it doesn't have a really catchy tune for a chorus for an example? I wonder if that's partly because the song is so long and does so much. The lyrics are the best part of the song for sure. I haven't heard much U2 I have to admit, but I enjoyed listening to Every Breaking Wave. I love the mood of it. Thanks for linking me to it!
