The Last Ten Books That Came Into My Possession

There are few things better than getting a whole stack of new books to read and love. My library trips are fairly epic in their book hauls if I do say so myself, mostly because, hey, free books! What’s not to like? Today I’m linking up with The Broke and the Bookish’s Top Ten Tuesday. This week’s prompt is the last ten books I managed to get my hands on. I have a rather full basket of library books, many of which I’m rather excited to get to reading, so let’s get to listing some books!

Skulduggery Pleasant: Last Stand of Dead Men
Derek Landy

This is a book I’m been hoping to find for ages. I’ve read pretty much all the other Skulduggery Pleasant books in the series, but alas this one is rather hard to find. Even this copy is actually an audiobook, which I don’t normally listen to. I much prefer reading myself to having someone read it out to me. But it’s Skulduggery. How can I pass it up?

The Edge of Nowhere + The Edge of Water
Elizabeth George

The Edge of Nowhere is actually a reread for me, but I figured it was probably a good idea to refresh my memory on plot details before diving into the second book. I’ve actually managed to read these two. The Edge of Water was a bit predictable and definitely not as good at the first book, but I’d be open to reading the third one, so it did something right.

A Little In Love
Susan Fletcher

This book actually tells Eponine’s side of the story from Les Miserables. Now, I have to admit, I’ve never actually read Les Miserables. It’s so big and long winded! But I love the movie, and I’m hopeful that, as this book is averaged sized, I might actually be able to get through it without wanting to kill French History with fire.

Stung
Bethany Wiggins

Another book from the stack that I’ve managed to read so far. It has a really interesting concept, with the disappearance of bees, a virus turning kids into monsters, and a gritty dystopian world. Alas, I couldn’t connect with the book as much as I wanted to, and most of the time I was left wondering why is honey the currency of the world and not chocolate? But nevertheless it was enjoyable.

Life In Outer Space
Melissa Keil

This book has geeks, geek culture, and apparently Princess Leia turning up in someone bedroom. I’m not the biggest fan of love stories normally, but apparently the main character is going to attempt to navigate this one using advice from the movies, which can only end badly, so I have hopes for this one.

Blood Ties
Sophie McKenzie

Mention secrets to do with identities, bodyguards and a good bombing, and I’m ready to read your book and hoping for an epic action adventure. I don’t actually know anything about this book, except that something gets blown up, but that’s all I need, right?

Just Henry
Michelle Magorian

This book appears to be all about the movies and old cinema tapes, and adventures connected with these, plus it makes me think of the movie The Last Action Hero, which was hilarious, so I’m hoping for good things out of this book.  Not that I know anything concrete about the plot, but who needs details, right?

The Maze Runner
James Dashner

I have a terrible confession to make. I’ve put off reading this book for ages. See, I’m terrified that I won’t like it and then I’ll be in trouble with all the bookish people. I made the mistake of trying to read some of the later books in the series first, like I have a habit of doing, and I hated the writing style intensely. I really want to read this one, but I’m scared of not liking it. The problems of being a bookworm…

Five Kingdoms: Sky Raiders
Brandon Mull

Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven books are amazing, so of course I snagged this book the moment I saw it. There are Sky Raiders, castles in the air (which I hope are literally buildings floating in midair) and jumping swords for some strange reason, which are all very cool things, so I’m really looking forward to reading this book sometime very soon.

Gathering Blue
Lois Lowry

I read The Giver recently, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I rather enjoyed it (I have a bad habit of not liking popular books), so I decided to give Gathering Blue a go too. Apparently it’s about different characters, but that’s ok by me. I liked the world enough that I want to know more about it, whoever the characters are.

These are some of my most recent bookish acquisitions. What books have come into your possession recently? What is the last book you read? Are you taking part in Top Ten Tuesday this week? Link me to your posts!

    1. I think I tried the third Maze Runner book and the constant going and and forth between the viewpoints confused and annoyed me so much. I look forward to trying Blood Ties now. It looks pretty cool. Thanks for stopping by Sue!

    1. It took me forever to get around to trying the The Giver, but I really like the writing style now. The writing is so tight, with no extra words anywhere, but it still manages to create an intriguing world, doesn't it? Can't wait to try the second one.

  3. Don't feel bad about not wanting to pick up Maze Runner so much. The bookish world is split on the book. Some love it and some hate it. I have one of the few that fell to the I dont like it so much category. The writing style was just not something I could get into. I hope you enjoy it though :)

    1. The writing style of the later books really annoyed me when I tried them. I couldn't wrap my head around the constant time shifts and, though it's been a while since I last tried reading them, I remember finding it difficult to connect to the characters too. I'm so glad to know it's not just me who's had trouble with these books.

  4. Interesting list! I haven't heard of a lot of these, but I have read STUNG, THE MAZE RUNNER, GATHERING BLUE, and SKY RAIDERS. I really liked the Wiggins series, thought TMR was just okay, liked GATHERING BLUE, and thought SKY RAIDERS was fun and imaginative. I hope you love all these.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Brandon Mull is so good at the whole imaginative story thing, isn't he? Fablehaven was one of my absolute favourite books when I was younger. Really looking forward to reading Sky Raiders after hearing your opinion on it. Thanks for dropping by!

  5. Great books you got recently. I actually bought the whole Skulduggery series, I'm hoping to get Landy to sign them all at YALC.... not really sure he could do all 9 though! haha

    1. You get to meet Derek Landy? How awesome! He could probably manage to sign them all, but the question is, how on earth would you carry them all? Thanks for visiting!

  6. I haven't read any of those! Let me know if any are good. I did read the Giver though in school.. I liked most of it, but the ending felt so sad to me.

Books I've gotten recently have mostly been by Diana Wynne Jones. I really wanted to reread this one series, and when I looked it up, I found out there were two more that I haven't read in it. So, yeah, I've been working on reading those. Its the Chrestomanci series by the by. Different worlds tied together by a wizard with 9 lives who polices them. Its a fun series!

    1. The ending of The Giver was so sad, I agree. But it fitted so well. I don't normally like sad endings. Happily ever after is more my thing. But it worked really well for that book. Oh the Chrestomanci books! My library used to have a whole heap of them and I read them like crazy. They were so fun. There was one about an egg that I liked particularly, but I don't remember what it was called, and now it's going to bug me forever!

    1. Stung has a really interesting concept, and handles its dystopian ideas really quite well. All up I'm really glad I read it, even if I did get confused by the honey as currency thing. If you get the chance, you should give it a try.

  8. YOU LIKE FABLEHAVEN OH YES OH YESSSSS.
I feel so terrible for not reading any of the Five Kingdoms books yet, but in my defense I just got 5/7 of the Harry Potter series(for free!!!), and I have several other books in my possession that I haven't read, so... *sighs at large TBR*

  9. I just got Stung from my library! I hope it is okay, but it sounds like you didn't regret reading it! Also, YAY FOR GATHERING BLUE! It's not about Jonas, but you see him again in Messenger. It ties up the whole world together; Lois Lowry talks about the same future in many different ways, and it is fascinating.
