Writing Music: Tick Tock

18:39

In preparation for the upcoming July session of Camp NaNoWriMo I’ve been looking for some great new music to help me through this challenge. In particular I’ve been listening to movie soundtracks, which are always excellent for painting moods and emotions. One I’ve been quite enjoying is the soundtrack for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Now, I’ve never seen the movie, but the music is very good at setting the mood of a scene. You can find the whole soundtrack here, but one of the pieces I like best is called Tick Tock.

This piece has quite a dark, threatening sound to it. There is a strong, constant undercurrent of tension throughout this piece accompanied by the ominous ticking of a clock. This would be the perfect piece for a tense situation, such as creeping through the dark in preparation for an attack, or trying to sneak around guards or enemies. The piece builds up dramatically towards the end, which could be good for a fight scene also, not an all-out battle probably, but one on a much smaller scale.

What is your favourite movie soundtrack? Recommend some to me! Have you listened to this soundtrack before? What is your favourite piece from it? What are you listening to this week?

  1. I love that soundtrack too! The Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Kingdom of Heaven soundtracks are the most inspiring for me.

I also recommend the music companies Two Steps From Hell, Audiomachine, and Future World Music--they are awesome!

    1. I do love the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. From the very few pieces I've heard of the Game of Thrones soundtrack, it sounds pretty amazing. I'll have to investigate your suggestions. They all sounds pretty cool. Thanks Myra!

  2. Ooooh this is an excellent piece! I never really listened to this soundtrack because I disliked the first movie's ost. This is great though!

    1. I haven't listened to the first movie's soundtrack yet, but I'm glad I managed to pick one from the second that you liked. The ticking clock sound really adds something, doesn't it?

  4. I haven't really listened to the soundtrack to the second movie, but I have the score for the first SH movie on my iPod, and it's great! My favourite track from that movie is Not in Blood, But in Bond.

I'll have to give this score a listen and see if it stands up to the first one:)

  5. YOU'RE DOING CAMP NANO TOO. *high-fives* Hope to see you around then, and best of luck! I didn't love Game of Shadows a LOT, but it had RDJ and as always that man is a gift to humanity, or so he would say. But thank you so much for the rec -- I normally just use the Game of Thrones theme song or the Imperial March for threatening music, but the sneaky undertone here is wonderful!

    1. Good luck with your Camp NaNo! The Imperial March is so good for threatening music. I swear, if I were a villain, that would be my soundtrack.
