Tribute to Writers Tag: My Thoughts on Writing

It’s not
often that you see a blog tag that is meant especially for writers, so when my
friend Kat from the blog (Almost)Completely Mad tagged me for the Tribute to Writers tag, I knew I was going
to take part in it. After all, this is a writing blog folks! Admittedly it has
taken me a while to get round to it, so I hope my answers are worth the wait
Kat!
A few rules before we get started:
1. Answer
all the questions
3. Tell
what you love about writing
4. Share
one piece of writing.
5.
Nominate 3 other writers/ bloggers. (no tag backs) and make up 5 new questions
for them to answer.
6. Have
fun!
Questions:
What is
your favorite type of writing? My favourite type of writing is definitely novel
writing, closely followed by blogging. I love telling the stories of the
different characters and tracing their journeys from their humble beginnings to
their heroic ends. And I enjoy sharing my writing and my experiences on my
blog, and being able to meet other writers and bloggers throughout the
blogosphere.
When did
you start writing? I
can’t actually remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I’ve been writing ever
since I knew how to form words, and telling stories since I could scribble a
picture with a crayon. Writing has always been a big part of mine and my
family’s lives. I finished my first full length novel when I was 13 or 14, and
never looked back since.
Your
favorite author? This is an unfair question. How can anyone expect
me to pick just one author to be my favourite? A few of my favourite authors
are Marissa Meyer, Victoria Hanley, and Maggie Stiefvater. Their books are
amazing and you should give them a read, if you haven’t already.
Have you ever
finished a novel? Depends what you mean by finished. I’ve written 12
novels, and 3 novellas, but I haven’t completely finished editing any of them
yet. I’m getting close with my fantasy novel The Crystal Tree though.
On a
scale of one to ten what would you rate writing? The
obvious answer for me is a ten. Writing is not only my hobby, but I’m hopefully
going to make it my career as well. Writing is a major part of my life and I
can’t imagine not doing it.
And now the all important question…
Why I like writing: I like writing because I meet
new friends who also happen to be my characters. I can have amazing adventures,
visit distant lands, ride dragons and battle unstoppable enemies and still be
home in time for dinner. Plus writing is a good excuse for consuming much
chocolate and tea.
Some of my writing:
This is an excerpt from the first chapter for my fantasy novel 'The Crystal Tree'.
Closing her eyes, Briar took a couple of deep breaths and tried to banish the nervousness, without much success. She'd just have to do her best. Slowly, Briar let down the magical guard in her mind that blocked out the sound of people's life songs. Every person had their own unique life song, as personal to them as a fingerprint, or a voice. Only a magician could hear these songs, a gift granted by the magic inside them. By singing this song and using her magic, she was able to speed the healing of a wound or illness and restore a person to perfect health in seconds. Unless of course they were dying. Even magic had its limits.
The captain’s song was strong, with a marshal beat like that of drums. Briar drew in a deep breath, then joined the song. As the first notes left her lips, the world around her disappeared. All the sounds and the light and the other novices around her seemed to vanish. The music of the life song swirled around her like water. As she sang, the aches of the captain's body transferred themselves to her. Her left ankle twinged with a strained muscle. A bruise on his upper arm throbbed on hers. The pain of a large cut sliced across her right forearm. General weariness hung over everything, making every movement a chore. Briar released her magic into the song. It shivered through her whole body, charging every note with a buzz of magic, throbbing through her blood. The song spun out of her lips, chasing away the man's pain. As the pain from the wounds disappeared, so too did the wounds vanish.
And there we have it. Now, I'm supposed to tag other writers, but I usually break this rule. I'd love for you to answer some of the questions in the comments below though. Or you could share a little excerpt. I'd love to see it!
What type of writing do you like best? When did you start writing? Tell me some of your favourite authors. One is never enough! Why do you like to write?

Brilliant answers! I love your excerpt. This was well worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteThanks for tagging me for this Kat. I'm glad that you enjoyed the excerpt. It's always so hard to pick an excerpt out of 80k+ words of a novel, so I'm glad I found a good one.
DeleteI love seeing what other writers have to say about writing! I would agree that Marissa Meyer is very talented—I've got Neal Shusterman, Eoin Colfer, and Mark Walden on my list. I'm curious to know what your story is about, though, it seems interesting!
ReplyDeleteOoh, Eoin Colfer and Mark Walden are both amazing writers. I haven't read any of their books in a while, but I'm kinda wishing I had some on hand now. I'm glad it seems interesting. I just wish I had an amazing synopsis to share with you, but I only have a really bad one at the moment that I came up with a couple of days ago. Maybe I'll post a little more about it later, if people are interested.
DeleteI love writing too!:)
ReplyDeleteExcept school work is getting heavy, and I struggle to find time to write..
I really enjoyed reading your answers!:)

The Journeys' of my beating heart
It's so hard to find the time to write sometimes, isn't it? I try and build it into my day, and I'm very lucky in the fact that I can choose when to do my study. I have no idea how school students do it. You are an inspiration.
DeleteBrilliant answers! I love your writing<3
