Writing Music: A Flat

20:32

Ever since I first discovered Lindsey Stirling and Taylor Davis on YouTube, I’ve been in love with violin music. It’s such a versatile instrument, able to play both classical and contemporary music beautifully. Many of my favourite pieces of music to write to are played on the violin. So it’s only natural that today’s writing music is another amazing violin piece, A Flat. This time it’s from a musician I’ve only just discovered, violinist Black Violin.

To me, A Flat has an edgy, urban feel to it. There’s an undercurrent of tension right through the piece, especially evident through the repeating themes of scurrying notes. This piece makes me think of darkened city streets with crackling tension in the air as if something big is brewing in the background. This piece would be good for city scenes set in the darker part of town, or possibly even a dystopian story.

What is your favourite piece of music featuring a violin, classical or contemporary? Have you ever listened to Black Violin before? What is your favourite piece of his? What are you listening to this week? Recommend me some new music!

  1. Ooh, Black Violin! My brother went to a performance of their's when they came into town; when I heard this song, it does remind me of a city scene, perhaps one where there is a masquerade ball and a girl running away after attending...

    1. That would have been a pretty awesome performance to go and see. I could just imagine that scene playing out to the accompaniment of this piece. Maybe like an urban Cinderella...

  3. I love this music! Thanks for sharing it! I haven't been listening to a lot of violin music lately, but I've enjoyed pieces by Sarah Chang, David Garret, and Lindsey Sterling, all pretty different musicians, but they are each so good at what they do!

    1. It's interesting to see how different violinists use their instrument in different styles. Black Violin, Taylor Davis, and Lindsey Stirling have three very distinct types of music, and I'm sure there are many more waiting for me to discover too. I'm glad you liked the music!
