Writing Music: Hello/Lacrimosa

19:00

After spending the last few weeks listening to Two Steps From Hell and Skyrim, I’m now on a bit of a strings kick with my listening habits. I always find string music very inspiring. The versatility of the instruments is amazing, and the music they create is even more so. I have so many favourite pieces of instrumental music involving strings, but one of my current favourites is from The Piano Guys. It’s an epic cross-over not only of songs, but also of musical periods. It’s a mash-up of Adele’s Hello and Mozart’s Lacrimosa.

This piece has a sad, introspective feel to it, full of quiet regrets. The cello heightens the sorrowful mood with its crying strings. Plaintive rises in the music are contrasted by much softer, more reflective moments. It’s an excellent piece for listening to while writing scenes where a character is regretting their actions, looking sadly back at something in the past, or mourning something in their present. It would do well for most genres, but especially for anything set in the real world. The video for this piece is also gorgeous, and well worth watching if you have a couple of minutes to spare.

Do you enjoy pieces mixing modern and classical music? Do ever write listening to instrumental versions of popular music? What are you listening to at the moment?

    1. They are, aren't they? They've gone quite a few of these mash-ups now, and I think they get better every time.

  3. OOOOH. I've listened to the Piano Guys' work before but not this one! Mozart is fantastic and although I didn't like Hello much, this one is so lovely. Definitely using it for the WIP sometime!

    1. I have to admit, I don't much like the actual song Hello (though I'm half tempted to cover it and see if I can make it something I actually like) but I was blown away by this arrangement. Only version I actually like. It's so good, isn't it? I'm glad you found this piece useful as well.

  5. I actually usually hate "Hello," but I guess I should thank you because this version made it suck less. Maybe because there wasn't any singing. XD At any rate, I really liked how it blended together so well! :) Thanks for sharing!

    1. Me too! I couldn't get the hype over it when the song was first released, and even the covers, which usually make me like a song better, couldn't make it better. It's a much better song without the lyrics really. So glad that you liked this version more than the original. Thanks for stopping to listen to it, especially as you don't actually like 'Hello'!
