My Writing Wishlist: Five Books for Someday

11:00

Like most writers, I have more ideas for books than time to write them in. My list of book ideas is longer than both my arms, and growing all the time. Today I thought that I would share five of my top ideas that I would like to write someday in the future. I’ll be linking up with Kara from Diary of a Teen Writer, who started this meme. Feel free to check out her blog and make a writing wishlist of your own.

A contemporary novel. I’d love to write a contemporary novel told from the point of view of a guy. I’ve never written a contemporary, partly because I have many more fantasy and sci-fi ideas than I do contemporary, and partly because it seems that contemporary books are geared around schools, jobs and boyfriends, none of which I’ve ever been to or had. And I haven’t written much from a guy’s perspective, so this would be a fun challenge.

A successful mystery. I’ve tried writing mysteries before, but unfortunately I have a terrible habit of getting too caught up in writing the book to actually stop and figure out what the mystery is. Obviously that is such a minor detail, right? I have some detective characters that I would like to work with, an uncle and niece combo, who are fun to write about, so now I just need a plot to work with. I have an idea for a murder mystery involving a waxwork museum, so I might see where that goes.

An urban fantasy. Fantasy in the real world is something I’ve longed to try for a while. I have a couple of ideas for a family who know about the hidden world of magic, but I haven’t managed to get much beyond the concept yet. Plus most of my ideas are pretty cliché at the moment, so this probably won’t get written until some great, unique ideas start popping up.

A fantasy novel involving a dream realm and a prince frozen in ice. I guess you can tell that I’ve actually thought about this idea a little. I know some of the awesome details that I want to put in this book. My problem? The entire plot happens to be missing. It appears that browsing Pinterest pictures is not enough to spawn the entire plot just yet. In the future, when I have some spare time and fresh ideas, I might try and get this project started.

A fantasy involving centaurs. I have no idea what I would write, but it strikes me that centaurs don’t get half enough attention in books. (Have you read a book with centaurs? What was it?) So of course, being the avid fantasy lover I am, I desperately want to write something involving these awesome four legged characters.

And there we have it. Five (very vague) books that I would love to write sometime in the future. What is the book you would most like to write in the future? Do you have genres that you would love to try writing?

  2. Great genres! Pinterest is great for sparking that urge to write, but unfortunately, it just never gives you the full plot, why?!
I hope you do end up writing these, it was interesting to see your ideas:)

    1. It's something I have often bewailed myself. Pinterest is ever so good for sparking plot bunnies that chew up my brain and distract me from the book I'm supposed to be working on. It gives me just enough to get excited, but not enough to work with. Frustration in the extreme.

    1. Thanks Heather. Actually, I was inspired to join in with this after I saw it on your blog at the start of the month. Your ideas seem way cooler when written out like this though...Centaurs are amazingly underrated in my opinion. they get a few wise old roles, and that's about it. I've never seen one as a main character. One day I shall change that. One day.

  4. You should definitely write these! I love your ideas. And Centaurs!! The only book I can think of off the top of my head would be Piers Anthony's Xanth novels... but they are silly. like, they are MEANT to be silly. and I can't remember when the centaurs came in...

So yes. I say you must write these. :-P

    1. I shall write a book about centaurs just for you Dragon. Can I put a dragon in it? I like dragons too. what about a centaur dragon hunter? No need to worry about having a horse. You are the horse!

  5. Ooh, thanks you for joining up! I'm so glad you did. Anyway, these are all brilliant ideas. A contemp. novel from the point of view of a guy is fantastic--I mean, all the contemps that I read are generally either a) in a girl's PoV, or b) a dual point of view. Which is fine, of course, bit it would be interesting to see one purely from a guy's. Also, mystery novels are such fun to write! I love the sound of that fantasy dream / ice novel. How cool does that sound?? And ohh, centaurs are so neglected in fantasy I think! They would be a fascinating creature to read / write about. I hope you get around to writing all of these one day. :)

    1. Thank you for hosting this link-up. I saw it floating around on a few blogs and I thought it was an awesome idea. It is true, you rarely see a contemporary from the boy's perspective alone. Mysteries are very fun to write, even though I'm terrible at them. Detectives seem to have such potential to be awesomely funny characters. Thanks for coming to visit my blog Kara!

  6. I really want to write a successful mystery someday. I have an idea for a historical fiction mystery, which I know will involve a ton of planning. I don't know what I'm getting myself into, tackling historical fiction and a mystery in one novel. Ooh, a fantasy novel about centaurs would be pretty awesome. The only book with centaurs I can think of is The Chronicles of Narnia, but centaurs were only side characters. They were more like props than anything else.

  7. Omg, I agree! CENTUARS! Why are they so underdone? I mean, I've read them as side characters, but never a book focused on them. Ooh, but yes yes to your icy dream prince novel. That sounds awesome. I know how you feel with just missing the plot though. ;-) Me = ALL THE TIME.
