Imogen's Quote Hoard
19:02I am a quote hoarder. I come across an amazing quote and I have to steal it, squirrel it away and bring out occasionally to stroke and admire. Some are inspirational, some are funny, and others sing to me with mystical music. All of them are precious to me. Today, as something a little different from the norm, I'd like to share a few of my favourite quotes from my extensive hoard.

Wise words of wisdom from Meg Cabot. The first person one needs to please with their book is themselves. Write whatever you want. If you like it, chances are someone else will too.

Publication is an amazing thing and many writers work towards it. But one should always write because they love writing, not because they love the idea of being published. Publishing is out of your control anyway, but writing is always available. Celebrate!

One of the hardest things to come to terms with is that your first draft is not going to be perfect. And neither are the second or third drafts. Be patient. The book will take as many drafts as it needs to be the best it can be. There's no quick way to perfection

This quote always makes me laugh. A day when writing is easy and the words flow perfectly without having to be forced out of ones head is a day to be treasured. Even if the cat did explode.
What is your favourite quote of these? Do you stockpile quotes like me? What are some of your favourite quotes?

Meg Cabot has such great words of advice! I need to get on reading the last book of the Princess Diaries series. The quote by Michael Crichton stuck a chord with me, because I've been trying to write about rocks and cookie cutters for the past several days but I'm always worried the drafts won't be perfect, and there lies the problem: I'm a perfectionist. There's another quote out there in the world that talks about first drafts, and though it has profanity, I'll say it (but substitute the word) because it's what finally gets me writing: "The first draft is always poop."

That quote about first drafts is always a great inspiration to me when I'm drafting too. For me, I have to extend it to the second and third drafts too, but it's always good to remember that even the professional writers write terrible first drafts and that it's normal.
DeleteOoh, these are such great quotes. Thanks for sharing them, Imogen!

Neil Gaiman is quite a quotable person. I have a fair few by him stashed away somewhere. Reading through quotes like these can be just the pick-me-up one needs sometimes, can't they?
DeleteIndeed!
