Writing Music: Gollum’s Song

11:46

I have to confess, I haven’t written a thing since Camp NaNoWriMo ended, and I’m not planning to even think about starting writing until next week. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been in very great need of a break from writing after the pressures of Camp NaNo. But while I haven’t been writing, I have been reading, blogging, and listening to music to recharge my creative batteries. This week, I’ve been listening to a new piece by one of my favourite Youtube artists, Peter Hollens. His latest song is a cover of Gollum’s Song from The Lord of the Rings. Everything about this piece has me dazzled, from the emotions in the words, to the visuals, to the sheer sad beauty of the music and the haunting backing track.

This song has been making me think about characters and their relationships towards each other, and is inspiring a lot of thoughts about main characters and what makes them so special. As well as provoking interesting thoughts about characters, this song is great for listening to while writing a scene of sadness or despair, or when a character has failed to do something important, or maybe when the character has been betrayed or deserted.

What are you listening to this week? What do you think of this song? What’s your favourite piece of music from The Lord of the Rings movies?

  1. This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oWVz8aVzGg from the crusader kings soundtrack has been immensely satisfying for my medieval-ish fantasy novel. I can almost feel my town come alive at its fingertips, even though it's not exactly right for it. It also has a nice tempo and upbeat theme which help propel the scenes forward. I keep wanting to keep up with the beat and write the next line.

    1. Oh that is perfect fantasy music! I have to check the rest of this game's music out too I think. No wonder it's good for your book. I love the drums underneath and the lute-like sound. Thanks for sharing this Ix. I'm looking forward to listening to more.

    2. The soundtrack is really great! I've barely played the game but the title song made me grab the music and I thought that was the best piece until recently where I re-listened to the whole set. The Simple Song for Commoners is something I can listen to all day, and "In Taberna" is really very good too.

    3. I'll have to have a listen to In Taberna. I've loved every single one of the other pieces I've listened to so far. It's a fantastic soundtrack. Funnily enough I'm just getting back into my fantasy book at the moment, and this music is pretty much perfect for that. It might even turn up in a Writing Music post sometime!
