Preparing for July Camp NaNoWriMo

Mock cover for Ember, designed by my very talented sister Charlotte

Tomorrow the Camp NaNoWriMo July session starts and I’m all ready to jump into the month and get busy writing. I’ve got my word goal set, my cabin full of friends ready to write with me, and my novel idea set out and ready to go. I even have a cover, synopsis and basic outline for this novel, so I’m feeling super organised at the moment.

For the July session of Camp NaNoWriMo, I’m going to be continuing my rewritten fairy tale series, which involves fairy tales, superheroes, cool gadgets, and an epic villain. This book is called Ember, and it is a rewrite of Cinderella. That fairy tale has been rewritten so many times that it’s going to be difficult to make it unique, but I’ve got some good ideas for the book, so hopefully it’ll turn out well. So, what’s it about exactly? Here’s the synopsis:

Hector, the leader of the mutant rebellion, is determined to stop the Mutant Registration Act, which will require all mutants to be registered and exposed to the public. When negotiations with the government fail, the children of leading politicians start disappearing, taken as hostages.

As a mutant and foster child, Lee has never lived in one place for long. When he wins a scholarship to a prestigious high school, he never imagined he would become friends with Rachel Brand, daughter of the Minister of Mutant Affairs.

Meanwhile, Sara and her mutant friends have been hunting for Hector without success. When Hector threatens Rachel, Sara goes undercover to protect her. After Lee helps her foil one kidnapping attempt, they join forces.

Time is running out for Hector. Rachel’s birthday party gives him the perfect opportunity to kidnap her too. Now he’s threatening to kill the hostages unless the act is repealed. Can Sara, Lee and the team rescue them before it’s too late?

As well as getting my novel in order for the month ahead, I’ve also been very busy preparing my blog. Thanks to the wonders of prescheduling, this blog will have all the regular posts throughout the month, as well as a special new feature that will post on every Wednesday for July only. I’ll give you a hint, it has something to do with what I’m writing for Camp. With the book and the blog prepared, I’m ready to tackle Camp NaNoWriMo. How about you?

Are you doing Camp NaNoWriMo in July? How have you been preparing? What are you going to be writing? If you’re not doing Camp, what are you writing at the moment?

  1. Your story sounds really interesting, and exciting. I'm so excited for camp! I'm working on finishing the last three chapters of my novel "The Paths of Thyme" and writing a collection of short stories. I've been preparing by stocking up on chocolate, I'm so glad that it starts in only one day, otherwise I might not have any chocolate left...

    1. Thanks Andrea! Sounds like you've got plenty of writing lined up for your Camp. Good luck with it, and may your chocolate never run out! I've been meaning to stock up on some myself, except that it would all be gone by now if I had!

  2. Good luck with Camp NaNo! This morning I had this fleeting hesitation of bribing Mime to do it with me. But she's going to be too busy once school goes back aaaand, I feel like it's too late to jump on the bandwagon. I'm just going to sit back and watch you all, and possibly read lots of books because that's SO much easier than writing them. ;)

    1. Ah books. I have a lovely large stack of them I got from the library last week, and I haven't read half of them. I am going to have to lock them away somewhere until I hit my wordcount every day I think. Definitely easier than rushing to write a book. There are always other camps, right?

I hope I'm well enough prepared.

    1. Good luck to you too Charlie. I'm so excited now that it's started. I've already got new characters popping up all over the place, demanding to be part of this story.
